Problem with Hotel Deposit. Hex 27, Provision of Nourishment, Line 3

Problem with Hotel Deposit

Hex 27, Provision of Nourishment, Line 3

Consultee: Kay

Question: Can I get my security deposit refund from the landlord?

Context: Business problem.

K was not happy with her hotel. She wanted to break the contract and get her deposit back. The landlady was not helpful at all. There were various problems with service and quality of the room. She had no received a written contract or receipt.

Outcome: K had tried getting angry before the prediction was made. After that she tried to negotiate at least some money back. Lastly, she tried calling the Tourist Police. The cop came and was sympathetic but did nothing.

My prediction:

I saw that there was indeed a problem or block. Going at it head-on is not going to overcome this. I recommended trying alternative strategies. I though there might be a chance, but as tried pretty hard it would seem this line is a dead end and nothing will repair a situation that is damaged.

Summary:

There was no danger to K in trying to get her money back.

She wasted some time and energy to no avail

"Hex 27 Line 3 Traditional Text:

The judgment:

Perseverance brings happiness. Pay attention to the provision of food. And what a man seeks To fill his own mouth.

Line 3:

Turning away from food. Perseverance brings misfortune. Do not act like this for ten years. Nothing will help."

I thought the traditional text was too negative here. There might be a way around the difficulty. The judgment warns against people who are greedy. This seemed to be a reference to the landlady. The text of the line is exaggerated: "Don't act like this for ten years" and "Perseverance brings misfortune", implying a real danger. I was pretty sure there was no danger. I know hexagram 27 quite well and it is neither powerful, nor dangerous. A mild hexagram.

IS THE I CHING ALWAYS RIGHT?

Is the I Ching always right?

Was the I Ching written by some divine agency using the human writer as a conduit? If so, it should always give a correct answer. Any apparent discrepancy between the oracle and the result will be caused by misinterpretation of the traditional text.

On the other hand, if it was written by humans, then there is no such guarantee.

We normally predict the future by looking at the past. This is most likely what the ancients did. They consulted a random oracle, noted the response and observed what transpired. They would have been principally interested in whether the fortune was good or bad. Was the hunt successful, with plenty of game and no injuries? Or was it a disaster—the hunters being attacked and killed by another tribe? They would note what the oracle was and remember it for next time. If it was consistent in meaning over several occasions, they would know they correctly defined its meaning. The result of their efforts was codified into the I Ching we read today. T

I am personally convinced that this is how the I Ching was written, and in this blog, I am attempting to prove it. I am doing this by making predictions and comparing outcomes. The results are posted here, and you can make your own mind up. mind up. Better yet why not try yourself? If you contact me and make a prediction, then your story can be published.

INTERPRETING THE I CHING

INTERPRETING THE I CHING

It is not possible to interpret most I Ching oracles without practical experience of what occurred after previous predictions had been made. If I receive hex 17 line 5, I know what this means because I have had it many times before and I know that its meaning is consistent. The first time I received this oracle, I followed the traditional text. The second time as well, but this was not successful and led me to misfortune. After that, I changed my interpretation and avoided further problems. See this post for details: A DANGEROUS WOMAN. Hexagram 17: Following, line 5.

I call this, 'verifying a line'. Before you can truly master I Ching, you must verify each line in this way. Personally, I have verified about two-thirds, so I am a two-thirds master!

There are many sites offering electronic predictions, but the advice is almost identical, as all are based on the same traditional text. Where this text is clear and good, they work. Unfortunately, most of the oracles are far from clear and of no practical use, as they merely confuse the consultee.

To anyone who is interested in helping me to 'verify' lines in this manner, I will offer free personal predictions.

Hexagram 19 Approach line 1. WE HAD PARADISE, BUT WE SOLD IT - I Ching case book

Have you ever felt like you were at the end of an era? The last flare of a candle before it dies.

Hex 19 traditional text

It was back in 1995, a perfect time to visit a Thai island, and this was my first trip to the mysterious East. Back then, it was like paradise on Ko Pan Gan. There was a healthy scattering of travelers, who were pleasant, interesting people, caused no trouble, and boosted incomes. We were most welcome.

I stayed for a month in a lazy resort right on a beautiful white sand beach in a sheltered cove. The weather was perfect and still cool before the onset of the hot season. The moonlit nights spent sitting on the beach playing music, drinking, and smoking weed under a smiling crescent moon were truly magical. The road to get there was a dirt track over rugged jungle covered mountains, so it was, by any standard, ‘out of the way’.

The resort had simple wooden bungalows right on the beach, and safe within my mosquito net, I could open the wooden windows wide to let in the sea breeze. The main building was made of wood with bamboo arches in between the  posts. Each arch contained intricate designs of woven bamboo. Real old fashioned Asia and very evocative and mysterious looking. The service and food were excellent, the only time I ever experienced real old style Thai hospitality. Green curry with fresh sea fish, cooked in fresh coconut milk, was the specialty of the house. For dessert, there were pancakes stuffed with bananas and served with thick sweetened coconut milk.

I those days, travelers said, "Bad roads, good people, good roads, all kinds of people," and it was true. The other guests were interesting, diverse, and amusing. An unemployed film cameraman who was always looking for camera angles with his hands, a writer of ghost stories looking for Thai ghosts, and two strange, lovely artist girls who looked like twins but were unrelated. They painted beautiful pictures on silk and sold them to help pay for their travels. Every night, there would be plenty of lively talk about life, love, and freedom.  There was a French guy who always told the most ridiculous stories. The most hilarious one was about riding a train in India. There were no toilets on the train, and it would have to stop periodically so people could relieve themselves by the side of the track. He desperately tried to avoid having to take a crap, but that night he could stand it no longer. He needed to shit so badly that he unenthusiastically stumbled across the rail tracks to join the line of Indians doing their business. Suddenly, he felt something warm and wet on his behind and, upon turning, discovered it was a pig licking his arse clean! Looking around, to his disgust, he saw many pigs all busy in the same manner. This story provoked howls of laughter.

It was one of the best times of my life. Sadly, I came very late to the Eastern traveler renaissance, which was soon replaced by concrete bungalows, bar girls, and tinned coconut milk in the green curry. I remember one island taxi driver saying to me, "We had paradise, but we sold it".

Traditional text for the hexagram

Wilhelm/Baynes : Approach has supreme success. Perseverance furthers. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune.

Supreme success is something of an exaggeration, as there is no promise of lasting success.

Line 1 Wilhelm/Baynes: Joint approach. Perseverance brings good fortune.

This line is spot on, and is one of the most consistently accurate predictions in the I Ching. This line means a short period of excellence, but it is not a good sign for the long term future. One should enjoy it to the fullest but not try to prolong its life.
