MY GUESTHOUSE IN CHIANG MAI

Chiang Mai was prospering, and I thought it was a good idea to try my hand at running a guesthouse. I leased a four-story house in town and converted it very nicely indeed. Everyone loved the way it looked, all brand new with artistic fittings. Business was good and all seemed well, then disaster struck. There was a coup, and instantly the trade dropped off drastically. I might have survived if I had not lost a lot of money when my manager ran off with the takings while I was ill. See: BAD BUSSINESS - HEX 42 LINE 3

I ended up having to sell the place at a considerable loss.

THE JUDGMENT

        APPROACH has supreme success.
        Perseverance furthers.
        When the eighth month comes,
        There will be misfortune.

Six in the fourth place means:

        Complete approach.
        No blame.
        
While the three lower lines indicate rise to power and influence, the three 
upper lines show the attitude of persons in higher position toward those of 
lower rank for whom they procure influence. Here is shown the open-
minded approach of a person of high rank to a man of ability whom he draws 
in to his own circle, regardless of class prejudice. This is very favorable.

The traditional judgment is quite good, as it offers a good start but trouble later. The line text, though, is not very helpful here. I had money and was respected, and I brought others into the business regardless of class sentiment. I thought I was doing well.

Knowing what I know now, I would probably not have taken the place, but if I had, I would have sold the business straight after refurbishing, as I would have almost certainly made a good profit.

We predict the future by observing the past. So, we must look to the results of previous readings to understand I Ching oracles.
